Skin-safe baby bedding in India means pure cotton or muslin, azo-free dyes, and a swaddle around a metre square — ours are 100×100 cm. Skip the padded cot set — no pillows, bumpers or loose quilts belong in a cot in the first year. A newborn needs swaddles, flat sheets and one light quilt for outside the cot.
What does "skin-safe" actually mean on a baby product?
It isn't a certification, and on an Indian listing it isn't regulated. Used honestly it means two things.
The fibre. Pure cotton or muslin. A polyester blend doesn't absorb sweat, so it sits on the skin — which in a Chennai August is the direct route to heat rash.
The dye. A subset of azo dyes break down into aromatic amines classed as hazardous. India prohibited 42 of them in 1993 and 70 more in 1997, under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and imports must comply too.
Neither is exotic or expensive. A seller who can't answer a plain question about either is the signal, not the price.
What baby bedding do you actually need?

What size should a baby swaddle be?
About a metre square — ours are 100×100 cm. Much below that, a swaddle stops working as a wrap within a couple of months and turns into a nursing cover.
Size matters more than thread count. A generous, slightly thin muslin wraps longer, layers better in winter, and dries faster in monsoon.

A dohar is three cotton layers with no filling — two muslin outer, one inner. Warm without being heavy, where a comforter would make a baby sweat.
Five questions to send any seller before you buy

- What's the fibre content — pure cotton, or a blend?
- Are the dyes azo-free?
- What's the finished size after washing, not before?
- Does it need a separate first wash, and will the colour bleed?
- What's the return window if it turns out not to suit?

What the price is telling you
Hand block printing is slow — one block, one colour, one impression at a time. A machine screen-print does in seconds what a printer does in a morning. That gap is most of the price difference between two swaddles that look alike in a photograph.

What should never go in a cot
- Pillows and bolsters in the first year.
- Cot bumpers, padded or mesh.
- Loose quilts and blankets over a sleeping baby.
- Soft toys in the sleep space.
- Anything with ribbons, ties or cords near the sleep surface.
The cot is a firm flat mattress, a fitted sheet, and the baby on their back. Everything else moves to the floor and the pram, where it gets more use anyway.
The free advice: buy the second set later
Everyone over-buys in month one and under-buys in month four.
Buy half of what the lists tell you before the baby arrives. You'll be given swaddles — everyone gives swaddles. Then around week three, buy a second set of whatever you found yourself washing every day. That's the one you'll use for two years.
