What to Gift a New Baby in India — for Every Occasion in the First Year

The baby gifts that get used are the ones without a size — a cotton swaddle, a light quilt, a wash pouch. Newborn clothes are outgrown within about a month and every guest brings them. The same few things work for a godh bharai, a naming day, a first Diwali or a first birthday, and they deliver anywhere in India.

The one rule for choosing a baby gift: no sizes

Give something that doesn't have a size.

Apply that one line and most of the pile disappears before you've even walked into a shop. What's left is the small handful of things that get picked up every day for the next two years.

Newborn clothes are lovely and everyone buys them. Most babies are out of that size within a month, sooner if they arrive on the bigger side, often while the family is still receiving visitors. If your heart is set on clothes, buy 6–12 months instead. Hardly anyone buys ahead, so that's usually the empty drawer.

The best gifts for a newborn baby in India

A set of cotton swaddles. If you give one thing, give these. A swaddle is a nursing cover, a pram cover, a clean sheet on somebody else's bed, a shade over the car seat, a floor blanket at a relative's house. It ends up being the thing the toddler won't sleep without. They live in the wash, so a set of two is the right unit — which is how ours come.

A light cotton quilt. Not a heavy winter one. A soft quilted cotton blanket is what gets used on the floor during play, over a pram, in an air-conditioned room. Worth knowing: quilts and blankets don't belong in the cot in the first year — safe-sleep guidance is a flat, clear cot — but out of the cot it's the piece most likely to still be in the house years later, by then as a den roof.

A wash or nappy pouch. Unromantic, used daily, and the thing most parents end up buying for themselves in the first fortnight.

Something for the mother. Fourteen people are about to hand over something for the baby. She is standing right there, three weeks into not sleeping, watching gifts arrive for somebody else. Hand cream, for hands that are about to be washed forty times a day. Something soft she can feed in. It costs the least of anything on this list and it's the one she'll still mention two years later.

What to gift at a godh bharai, naming ceremony and first birthday

Occasion What to give Why
Godh bharai / baby shower (valaikappu, seemantham, dohale jevan, shaadh) Swaddles, a light quilt, something for the mother The baby isn't here yet. Give what the first weeks use up — this is the one occasion where multiples of the same thing are genuinely useful.
Naming ceremony (namkaran) A quilt or swaddle in a print with character Held in the first few weeks, and photographed. It earns its place in the day's pictures and goes back to daily use the next morning.
Annaprashan, the first-rice day A quilt, or a bib-and-pouch pairing Around six months, and the first occasion where the baby is sitting up in every photograph. Messier than it looks — anything washable wins.
Homecoming, or your first visit A swaddle set, a wash pouch — and a cooked meal Keep it small and immediately useful. Nobody regrets the food.
First Diwali or first Rakhi Something in a festive print that isn't a costume The first festival gets photographed and remembered. An outfit gets worn once.
First birthday A backpack, or a bigger quilt they grow into The baby now has opinions, and playschool is closer than the parents think.
A friend's baby, when you don't know the family well A toiletry or wash pouch Almost impossible to get wrong. And if nobody has told you whether it's a boy or a girl, don't ask — the prints work either way, which is half the reason people choose them.

How to send a baby gift to India from the USA, UK or Dubai

Plenty of the messages we get start with "I'm in the US and the ceremony is on Sunday". You don't need to ship anything from where you are. Order to an Indian address, we deliver across India, and your message goes on the gift note so the parcel arrives sounding like you rather than like a courier.

Two things people ask and are slightly embarrassed to: no invoice or price goes inside the parcel — what arrives is the gift, the pouch and your note. And if the ceremony is this weekend, message us before you order and we'll tell you honestly whether it will get there in time.

Orders over ₹1,999 come with a gift pouch, so nobody is hunting for wrapping paper at nine at night, and shipping is free over ₹750.

What not to gift a newborn baby

  • Strong fragrances. Newborn skin reacts to them, and plenty of new mothers are still queasy for weeks. It's the one gift that can genuinely make things worse.
  • Big soft toys. They arrive by the dozen and go straight into storage.
  • Anything with small parts that come off, even if it's meant for later.
  • Party outfits in newborn size. Beautiful in one photograph, then never again.
  • Cot sets with pillows and bumpers. Safe-sleep advice is a flat, clear cot in the first year — no pillows, bumpers or loose bedding.

The things people ask us before they order

  • What's touching the skin. Azo-free dyes on natural cotton. Every gift for a newborn should be able to say that without a paragraph of small print underneath.
  • Whether it arrives ready to give. Gift pouch included over ₹1,999, and a gift note in your words.
  • If it's already in the house. Every family gets three of something. Ten days to return or swap, no explaining required.
  • Getting it there. Free shipping over ₹750, delivered across India, cash on delivery available.
  • A whole class or a party. Return-gift orders start at ten pieces, in one print or mixed, and we come back with a quote inside a day. Tell us what you need

How to write a baby gift message

Write on the tag, not the box. And write to the mother, not to the baby.

The box goes out with the recycling that same week. The tag ends up taped inside the back of the baby book, and it stays there.

If you're giving a swaddle or a quilt, either wash it first or say plainly that it needs one. A line that says give this a cold wash before use, it only gets softer is a small kindness in a month when everyone is telling that family a hundred contradictory things.

Questions we get asked

What should you gift a new baby in India?

Things that don't depend on size and get used daily — cotton swaddles, a light quilt, a wash or nappy pouch — plus something for the mother. Newborn clothing is outgrown within about a month and most guests already bring it.

What do you gift at a godh bharai?

Give what the first weeks use up: a set of swaddles, a light cotton quilt, and something for the mother. The baby isn't here yet, so practical multiples are more useful than a single keepsake.

What is a good gift for a naming ceremony?

For a namkaran, something that photographs well and stays useful — a block-printed quilt or swaddle in a print with character. It appears in the day's photographs and goes back to daily use the next morning.

What is the difference between namkaran and annaprashan?

Namkaran is the naming ceremony, usually held within the first few weeks. Annaprashan is the first-rice ceremony at around six months, when the baby is given solid food for the first time. They are separate occasions about five months apart.

Is it alright to give clothes as a baby gift?

Yes, but buy 6–12 month sizes rather than newborn. Most babies are out of newborn sizing within a month, and it's the size every other guest buys.

What should you avoid gifting a newborn?

Strongly fragranced products, large soft toys, anything with small detachable parts, newborn-size party outfits, and cot bedding sets with pillows or bumpers. Safe-sleep guidance is a flat, clear cot for the first year.

Can I send a baby gift to India from abroad?

Yes. Order to an Indian address, add your message as a gift note, and it arrives wrapped. Shipping is free over ₹750 and delivery covers India, so nothing has to be shipped internationally. No price or invoice goes inside the parcel.

Can I order baby gifts in bulk for an event?

Yes — return-gift and event orders start at ten pieces, in a single print or mixed, with a quote within a day.
